Two 72-year-old women discover they were switched at BIRTH after taking 23andMe test (LINK)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5840127/Two-72-year-old-women-discover-switched-birth.html

Since the advent of DNA genealogical testing, the world is getting odder and odder- and old family mysteries- some, we didn’t even know existed- are getting churned up.

I’ve discovered this in my own family research, via 23andme.com, as well. My grandmother’s father wasn’t her biological father at all- it was another man, whom I tracked down via mathematics, ancestry research, and the odd stranger popping up in my group of close relatives out of the blue.

More on my family’s journey at another time- but for now, this is an interesting article.

Georgia Woman Tries To Perform Sex Change Operation On Her 4 Year Old Son In Burger King Bathroom

bk

News 8 – A stand-off at an Atlanta, Georgia Burger King nearly ends in tragedy after a mother tries to castrate her son in an attempt to make him a woman before school starts. Laura Lambert, 25, was arrested on Wednesday and booked on charges of child abuse, child endangerment and assault. According to police reports, Lambert was seen scolding her son in the Burger King play area telling him “I told you not to wear that shirt! Pink, you were supposed to wear pink!”

Eyewitnesses say Lambert swatted her four-year-old son and told him, “If you don’t stop acting like a boy, I’m going to take you into the bathroom and whoop your *ss.” Then, she did just that. Kimberly Wilson, a patron at the restaurant, said she saw Lambert dragging her son into the restroom and immediately told the manager.

“She dragged him in there by his hair. The boy has beautiful, long hair,” Said Wilson. “Then, all we heard was screaming. ‘No mommy no!’ That’s all we could hear. The manager got the key to the restroom and there was blood, just blood.” Tommy Robertson, the manager of the Atlanta Burger King, said when he was able to access the restroom he tackled Lambert to the ground removing a 5 inch pocket knife from her hand. The customers at the restaurant said the scene was absolutely terrifying.

“This is something I will never be able to get out of my head,” Wilson said as she hugged her daughter who was with her that day. “I could never imagine harming my child. I hope they lock up that nasty b*tch for the rest of her life!”

The four-year-old boy suffered lacerations to his genital area which required 12 stitches, as well as bruising to the arms and face. He is being treated at the local hospital in stable condition. Authorities say he is being released to his father. As for the mother, she has remained silent since the incident and has refused to give a statement to police.

Shark Attack … In a Lake?!

Shark Attack … In a Lake?!
By Tanya Lewis, Staff Writer | August 14, 2014 03:20pm ET

The idea of a shark attacking someone in the ocean is scary enough, but this week, a 7-year-old boy was bitten by one of these fearsome fish in a lake.

The boy was swimming in Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana, when something bumped into him in the water and chomped down on his foot, USA Today reported. The bite’s appearance suggests it was probably a bull shark measuring about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long, experts say. The boy is expected to recover from the incident.

While it may seem unusual for a shark to turn up in this part of Louisiana, Lake Pontchartrain isn’t strictly a lake — it’s an estuary, a coastal body of brackish water connected by rivers or streams to the open ocean. The lake is connected to the Rigolets strait and Chef Menteur Pass to Lake Borgne, which opens into the Gulf of Mexico. [8 Weird Facts About Sharks]
Bull sharks can survive in both saltwater and freshwater, and have been known to frequent the lake. But shark attacks are extremely rare, said John Carlson, a research biologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service in Panama City, Florida.

“I can’t recall the last time there was a shark attack in Lake Pontchartrain,” Carlson told Live Science.

Sharks don’t usually attack humans. In fact, “you have a better chance of being struck by lighting on a golf course” than being bitten by a shark, Carlson said.

When it does happen though, as in this case, a shark will commonly mistake the flashing movement of a human foot for its natural prey — a mullet or catfish, for example. The shark will go up and bite it, and then realize it’s not food. “We call it ‘bite and run,'” Carlson said.

Bull sharks can survive in freshwater by regulating the amount of salt in their bodies. That’s why when some sharks are cut open, they smell like urine, Carlson said. Salt in a shark’s body normally has a tendency to make it swell up with water, but bull sharks have a special salt gland that keeps the concentration of sodium chloride inside their bodies in balance with the concentration outside — a phenomenon known as osmoregulation.

In addition to the bull shark in Lake Pontchartrain, there have been accounts of other sharks found in lakes. In July 2013, a man and his grandson spotted what may have been a great white shark in Lake Macquarie, Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake, the Newcastle Herald reported.

Great white sharks generally aren’t found in estuaries, however — they usually stick to more coastal regions, Carlson said.

If you’re going to swim in places that sharks are known to frequent, however, it’s best to avoid areas or times of day when the sharks are more active and water visibility is low, such as dawn or dusk, Carlson said. Avoid wearing shiny jewelry, he said, because it can resemble a struggling baitfish. And there is safety in numbers, so swim in groups, and don’t swim near fishermen, he said.

Ever since video of Hannibal Burress making jokes about the not-so-well-known accusationswent viral, the media has been on fire for news about the rape allegations against Bill Cosby. Yet aside from more and more accounts of rape from reported victims, no documented evidence could be attributed to the famous comedian. At least, before the sealed 2005 deposition was released in July.

On July 6, the Associated Press reported that Cosby admitted during questioning toadministering Quaaludes to young women for the purpose of having sex with them. It was the first time any kind of evidence, let alone a supposed admission, had leaked to the press. As a result, former Cosby defenders left his side, Disney World removed a bust of the comedianfrom an exhibit, and a White House petition called for his Presidential Medal of Freedom to be revoked.

Yet as horrible as all of this is, none of it compares a The New York Times story published on late Saturday, in which the paper got its hands on a copy of the deposition. If accurate, then the portrait painted of the once beloved stand-up comedian and television personality is about to make things a whole lot worse for him, his wife and manager Camille Cosby, and their team:

Even as Mr. Cosby denied he was a sexual predator who assaulted many women, he presented himself in the deposition as an unapologetic, cavalier playboy, someone who used a combination of fame, apparent concern and powerful sedatives in a calculated pursuit of young women — a profile at odds with the popular image he so long enjoyed, that of father figure and public moralist.

No, it’s not that bad. It’s actually much, much worse.

Early on in the article, the NYT’s Graham Bowley and Sydney Ember detail the story of an unnamed 19-year-old model “who sent him her poem and ended up on his sofa,” where “she pleasured him with lotion.” And remember, this is all from a deposition — an interrogation in which Cosby told investigators about these things, and in great, horrible detail:

He spoke with casual disregard about ending a relationship with another model so he could pursue other women. “Moving on,” was his phrase.

He suggested he was skilled in picking up the nonverbal cues that signal a woman’s consent.

“I think I’m a pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things, whatever you want to call them,” he said.

Through it all, his manner was largely one of casual indifference.

His tone here, need I remind you, is apparently best described as “one of casual indifference.” The man is well aware of what he was doing, and yet he didn’t really care about any or all of the possible implications of wrongdoing. That, or he wasn’t capable of recognizing them.

Probably the worst bit comes near the end of the article, in which Bowley and Ember recall the story of Beth Ferrier:

He could be dispassionate in recalling former relationships. With a woman named Beth Ferrier, a model he met in the 1980s, he recalled inquiring after her career and her father, who had died of cancer.

“Did you ask her those questions because you wanted to have sexual contact with her?” Ms. Troiani asked.

“Yes,” Mr. Cosby responded.

Still, he said he viewed himself as a good person, worthy of trust, and chivalrous in his desire to never tell others about the women with whom he had sex.

“I am a man, the only way you will hear about who I had sex with is from the person I had it with,” he said.

Obviously, that last part isn’t entirely true, as Cosby’s legal team has fought long and hard to keep many of the lawsuits and complaints filed against him quiet. Not even the women he allegedly raped were allowed to tell whether or not Cosby had had sex with them:

In the court case, 13 women came forward with anonymous sworn statements to support Ms. [Andrea] Constand, saying that they, too, had been molested in some way by Mr. Cosby. But they never had a chance to pursue their claims in court because, six months after the fourth and final day of his deposition, Mr. Cosby settled the case with Ms. Constand on undisclosed terms.

Speaking more than one language makes you smarter: Bilingual people have more grey matter than those who only know their mother tongue

Maisie already knows English and Persian and a bit of Tagalog (Filipino).  I have one person in the house who has exclusively spoken Farsi (Persian) to her since she was 4 months old. She can respond/answer in both languages interchangeably. My mother and I add a few Filipino words here and there…

It’s official! Speaking more than one language makes you smarter: Bilingual people have more grey matter than those who only know their mother tongue

  • Being bilingual increases the grey matter in certain parts of the brain
  • This difference is not present if the other language known is sign language
  • Management of two spoken languages leads to cognitive advantages

People who speak two or more languages have more grey matter in certain parts of their brain, a study has found.

But this difference is not present if the other language known is sign language.

Scientists found that being bilingual increases the size of the part of the brain responsible for attention span and short term memory.

A study by Georgetown University Medical Centre found adults who are polyglots have more grey matter, shown above in blue, but those who used sign language did not (file image)

In the past it had been thought children who spoke two languages could have been at a disadvantage because the presence of two vocabularies would lead to delayed language development.

But recent research has found they perform better on tasks that require attention, inhibition and short-term memory – collectively termed ‘executive control’ – than their monolingual peers.

Yet controversy still surrounded whether there was a ‘bilingual advantage’, because these differences were not observed in all studies.

Now a study by Georgetown University Medical Centre in Washington DC has found adults who are polyglots have more grey matter, but those who use sign language do not.

The management of two spoken languages, rather than simply a larger vocabulary observed in practitioners of sign language, improved cognitive performance. Above, a mother and child practice signing (file image)

It adds to a growing understanding of how long-term experience with a particular skill – in this case management of two languages – changes the brain.

Dr Guinevere Eden said: ‘Inconsistencies in the reports about the bilingual advantage stem primarily from the variety of tasks that are used in attempts to elicit the advantage.

‘Given this concern, we took a different approach and instead compared grey matter volume between adult bilinguals and monolinguals.

‘We reasoned that the experience with two languages and the increased need for cognitive control to use them appropriately would result in brain changes in Spanish-English bilinguals when compared with English-speaking monolinguals.

‘And in fact greater grey matter for bilinguals was observed in frontal and parietal brain regions that are involved in executive control.’

The study, published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, explored why differences in grey matter are based on experiences.

Dr Olumide Olulade said: ‘Our aim was to address whether the constant management of two spoken languages leads to cognitive advantages and the larger grey matter we observed in Spanish-English bilinguals, or whether other aspects of being bilingual, such as the large vocabulary associated with having two languages, could account for this.’

Researchers compared the grey matter in bilinguals of both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English, with that of monolingual users of English.

Both ASL-English and Spanish-English bilinguals share qualities associated with bilingualism, such as vocabulary size.

Unlike bilinguals of two spoken languages, ASL-English bilinguals can sign and speak simultaneously, allowing the researchers to test whether the need to inhibit the other language might explain the bilingual advantage.

Dr Olulade added: ‘Unlike the findings for the Spanish-English bilinguals, we found no evidence for greater grey matter in the ASL-English bilinguals.

‘Thus we conclude that the management of two spoken languages in the same modality, rather than simply a larger vocabulary, leads to the differences we observed in the Spanish-English bilinguals.’

Bacon Flavored Seaweed Is The New Kale

I could totally dig this. When I lived in Canada in my late teens/early 20s, I was introduced to the wonders of dulse by my neighbor, who was from New Brunswick.

dulse-cooked-ss
Bacon-flavored seaweed is the new kale. Yes, really.

Scientists are currently cultivating a marine plant that’s packed with more nutrients than the trendy green superfood kale. And it naturally tastes like bacon.

Bacon-flavored crackers. Bacon-flavored salad dressing. These are just two of the savory treats that have been created so far using the domesticated strain of dulse (Palmaria palmata), a kind of red algae, or seaweed, that typically grows in the waters along northern Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. [Science You Can Eat: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Food]

Dulse is usually harvested in the wild, dried out and then sold for up to $90 a pound, according to researchers at the Oregon State University (OSU) Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, who developed the domesticated strain of the plant.

The OSU researchers are working on making dulse more affordable and more widely available. Their strain of the lettucelike marine plant can be cultivated using hydroponic farming methods in which the plants are grow in water, without any soil. These methods make dulse much easier to grow and harvest, and therefore more affordable. The researchers are currently producing about 20 to 30 lbs. (9 to 14 kilograms) of this fast-growing plant each week in two large, water-filled tanks at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
However, Chris Langdon, a professor of fisheries at OSU who is leading the seaweed-farming effort, said that he and his colleagues can amp up production of the delicious plant to 100 lbs. (45 kg) a week. Langdon has been growing dulse for 15 years, but he and his fellow researchers only recently patented their novel strain of bacon-flavored seaweed.

The researchers originally started growing the plant as a food for abalone, a kind of large, edible mollusk that’s often raised in commercial “aquaculture” farms. An excellent source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and protein, dulse is the perfect food for farm-raised abalone, Langdon said.

“The original goal was to create a superfood for abalone, because high-quality abalone is treasured, especially in Asia. We were able to grow dulse-fed abalone at rates that exceeded those previously reported in the literature,” Langdon said in a statement.

But the researchers recently shifted their focus from feeding abalone to feeding humans. When Chuck Toombs, an instructor in OSU’s business department, stopped by Langdon’s office for a visit, he saw the tanks of seaweed growing outside Langdon’s door. Toombs had come to ask the fisheries professor if he had any ideas for business projects for students. Clearly, the appeal of a bacon-flavored health food was not lost on Toombs.

WTF?! Florida Man Arrested for Having Sex with an Alligator!

florida-man-arrested-for-having-sex-with-an-alligator2

People have had sex with pit bulls, donkeys and even parrots, but this incident is on another level.

Rupert Darwin, 59, kept a 12 foot alligator tied and blindfold for the last month, sexually assaulting the reptile multiple times a day.

Darwin is a relatively unknown fisherman who lives in the outskirts of the remote town of 400. Residents say he sticks to himself and described him as “odd.”

Police responded after a man out of a nature hike happened to walk by Darwin’s house and saw Darwin having sex with the alligator in his backyard.

The witness heard Darwin say, “next time you try to kill a man, you best get the job done. Now you’re my bitch forever.”

“It was the damn strangest thing I’ve ever seen,” the witness told police. “The gator didn’t even move. It was like it didn’t give a s**t that man was having sex with it.”

Collier County Sheriffs responded and arrested Darwin on multiple counts of animal cruelty and one count of illegally keeping a wild animal.

Excerpt from Darwin’s police statement:
The gator tried to eat me and this was revenge, pure and simple. I don’t have no sexual attraction to gators, but I wanted to teach this bitch a lesson. I could have just killed her, but that would have been too easy. She was getting what she deserved.

Darwin also told police he had planned to chop off the alligator’s tail and pull her teeth as part of his revenge scheme and had even considered performing noise torture on the reptile by playing what Darwin described as “nigger music” over and over.

Darwin claimed the alligator had gotten a hold of his pant leg when he was fishing in a swamp and tried to drag him into the water. Darwin was able to escape without injury, but that had set his resolve to get revenge.

The alligator is being treated for relatively minor injuries and is expected to be released back into the wild within a couple weeks.
